School Health Scheme

INTRODUCTION

School Health Scheme under the Dte, of Health Services, Govt of Delhi, was launched in 1979 to provide comprehensive health care services to the school going children. The scheme started with six school health clinics established in the school premises itself. These clinics are planned initially to cover the children studying in Govt. and Govt. aided schools. The scheme was expanded during the 7th five year plan and a total no. of 63 school cinics have been established in various school premises. The scheme is headed by Dy .Director/Chief Medical officer to carry out day to day functioning of SHS which include planning, implementing , administration and monitoring of various programmes. School Health Clinics are situated within the school premises. Each S H Clinic cater to about 5 to 6 thousand children derived from the cluster of 6 to 8 schools located around the main School Health Clinic.

-Prevention of diseases
-Early detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and
-Referral of children who require spl. treatment, to school referral centres.

FUNCTIONING OF SCHOOL HEALTH CLINIC

School Health Clinics provide comprehensive integrated health care services to school children to achieve the objectives of the school health programme. The services provided to the students include :-
- Routine health check up of the students
- Immunization against tetanus and other vaccine preventable diseases.
- Curative services
- Referral and follow up of cases
- Health education etc.

The school medical team report to their respective clinics at 9am.and set up the clinic as per their plan schedule and call the children of respective class for routine medical examination. Cumulative health record is filled for each child. During the routine examination health education is also given at individual level and in a group. Children needing specialist services are referred to specialist and later follow up is done by medical team. Cumulative health record contain details of health illness, treatment advices and follow up given to a child.

Along with above activities O.P.D. is conducted daily to provide first aid and emergency services to children and to staff. Incidental health education is also provided.

In special cases class teachers and parents are informed about the condition of the child and are advised for regular treatment and follow up. Parents and teachers are also given health guidance and counselling along with the school children.

Health education is an ongoing activity carried out during O.P.D. medical examination , immunization, in the prayer meeting, in classes or in assembly hall. Topics are chosen on the basis of need and current problem in the community. Various A.V.Aids are used to impart health education.

Every year all the children of 10 and 16 years of age are given booster dose of tetanus-toxoid.

Sanitary survey is done by school medical team and suggestion are given to concerned authority for its improvement.

A close liaison is maintained by the school medical team with the school authorities. Monthly compiled report is submitted by school health clinics at SHS Head Office on the Pay day.

SHIFTING OF CLINIC

School medical team shift from main clinic to sub clinics in rotation to provide services to all the students in their respective cluster. Shifting of clinics is planed in advance and before shifting informs the MO I/C SHS Head Office and school authorities. The team carries all the necessary supplies, stationary medicine, equipment etc . In this way all the schools in the cluster are covered within a year. After completing the schools team returns back to their main clinics.
